A collection of movies with high definition dynamic sound effects, mixing and music. These movies are best experienced with a dedicated 5 or more channel sound system, with a sub-woofer or two.

Movies Best Enjoyed in Surround Sound

If you're looking to find the very best high resolution movies for your brand new 4K O/Q/M/N/LED television, you're not going to have much of a luck — at least for now. Only a fraction of the so-called "UHD" movies are true 4k masters (35mm film and above scans for analog, or shot/rendered in 4k for digital productions).

However, blu-rays (and even a lot of DVDs) and modern streams (although quality of audio is inferior) come with multiple audio tracks beyond the standard stereo channels. There's a huge collection of multimedia to choose from to really feel your new home theater system — And you don't need to shed thousands of hard earned dollars to experience it – Grab a front-subwoofer-rear set for as little as $400 to get started with a simple 5.1 setup for a better effect than a single sound bar or the internal speakers!.

Here's a collection of a few movies in no particular order to really immerse yourself in on the action.

Top Gun: Maverick (2021)

0 min

Twoo tu too tu twee. Tweety tweety tew two tweety tweety twoo twoo. One of the rare true IMAX experiences. You HAVE to watch this in surround, miles (hehe) better than the original in terms of sound.

Dune (2021)

0 min

A must watch in theaters, this cinematic masterpiece with excellent sound design translates well into a home theater environment.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

0 min

This is two hours of pure high adrenaline action. Guaranteed to pump you up.

Inception (2010)

0 min

Hans Zimmer really went into dreams for this one. The calming and action packed sound track feels even better in surround.

Gravity (2013)

0 min

In space, no one can hear you scream. The academy award winning sound design create a soundscape that put you right into the domain of space.

The Dark Knight (2008)

0 min

This needs no introduction. As someone who watched it for the first time in a DVDRip format, my experience improved many-fold with the Ultra HD blu-ray.

1917 (2019)

0 min

This academy award winning 'one-shot' film deserves praise for its sound design. With a atmos mix of gunshots and explosions, you'll be dropped right into the trenches of the first world war.

Ford v Ferrari (2019)

0 min

If you like car racing, car sounds, or anything to do with cars, please experience this with the deepest sub-woofers you can find.

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

0 min

The action packed opening scene is probably the best depiction of Omaha Beach invasion, with gunshots and explosions best experienced in a surround setup.

Wall E (2008)

0 min

The sound designer Ben Burtt created sounds for every bit of Wall-e's movements. The animated feature really comes alive in a theater.

Tron Legacy (2010)

0 min

The neon visual landscape is accompanied with appropriate techno-punk music, a departure from realism based sounds.

Interstellar (2014)

0 min

Chris Nolan's persistence for loud asf music and sounds paired with Matthew McConaughey's numbing accent makes for a hard-to-understand film if you're not watching it with subtitles; but as controversial as this is, it does feature some of the best scores of all time — Just pump up your center channel to understand the dialog!

The Last Samurai (2003)

0 min

Tom Cruise as a Samurai, huh. The beautifully shot war film has some of the best battle sequences, elevated by a powerful soundtrack — worthy of being experienced on a large screen with big woofers.

Black Panther (2018)

0 min

As superhero origin stories go, it's nothing we've not seen before. What's different is the setting, art, and the music! Ludwig Göransson created the score out of traditional African instruments, and it is a delight to hear in Surround.

The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003)

0 min

(Well the whole trilogy of course!) Having loved these years ago in a 720x404 resolution with 96kbps stereo sound, I was blown away (again) experiencing these on those shiny 4k-HDR blu-rays. This is one of those films that age like fine wine. A must watch, especially in atmos.

Red Cliff (2008)

0 min

Set nearly 2000 years ago, this particular war epic by the legendary John Woo has one of the best large scale battle sequences ever shot on film, accompanied with a adrenaline rushing sound effects. Best enjoyed in surround – the 5-hour two part blu-ray, not the cut single version.

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

0 min

The sound in this one is designed to tear your subs a new one. Even at half volume I found my windows to be shaking, and floor to be vibrating, much to the dismay of neighbors below. A must watch.

The Hurt Locker (2008)

0 min

Sound designer Paul Ottosson creates a gruelling soundscape of the Iraq War with most of the sounds recorded on location rather than a studio. The lack of music during tense sequences put you right in the action.

Avatar (2009)

0 min

Best experienced in an IMAX screen, this visual masterpiece is something to show off your latest audio/video gear.

Apollo 13 (1995)

0 min

From heart thumping sounds of the Saturn V rocket launch to James Horner's soundtrack, this masterfully recreated Apollo 13 space mission tells a great story, coupled with equally amazing sounds.

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

0 min

Queen, in multi-dimensional sound! Hell yeah!

Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982)

0 min

Is there anybody out there...? Featuring vivid imagery and the best version of The Wall album, it's a must listen.

Dunkirk (2017)

0 min

Oh look, Nolan is back with louder than airplane sounds, this time in 1940 with a non-linear storyline that will probably make sense after a couple of rewatches and a YouTube explainer. Great music and sound mixing though, something to test the limits of your home system.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2000)

0 min

For a soundtrack produced within two weeks, this martial arts film by Ang Lee secured 10 oscar nominations! Featuring impressive cinematography, sotry, art and music design, it is a must experience in a theater.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

0 min

The only other animated feature on this list, this combines a unique art and animation style with music to match. A definite watch in surround.

That's all for now, I'll be updating the list occasionally. If you've personal favorites to watch in surround, you can recommend them over on telegram or email!
